Keeping Abreast of Health Checks
In my doctor’s office for a physical this week I learned that the method for a breast self exam has apparently changed. The way we were taught to do it, and the way it’s depicted on those little guides we get at drugs stores and doctor’s offices, is apparently out of date. The word isn’t getting around because I was unaware and so were all of the sisters at work who I asked about it. Since we were adolescents, we’ve all been doing monthly checks the same way.
Basically, instead of a circular check, now it should be performed in a vertical zig zag fashion and higher, lower and further to the side than you think you should go. All of that tissue is considered to be part of the breast and needs checking. The zigs and zags should meet so that the entire area is completely covered.
Ask your doctor about it. If I didn’t know, I’m sure many others haven’t been told either. If you’re a guy, mention it to the woman in your life. Early detection saves lives and we want to be doing it the best way possible if we’re going to bother doing it at all.
****UPDATE: Our health reporter, Eva Fragiskatos, talked to the Canadian Cancer Society and their spokeswoman said there is no one set way to do the check. It’s whatever way you feel comfortable with. So, the doctor who checked me has decided the vertical method is the most thorough and best, and is recommending that to her patients. But not all doctors will.
