Sleep Deprivation Personified

Posted By Lisa

I think it was because I slept very little all last week. I think it was because I had a lot on my mind, including a significant legal issue, and I was distracted.  I think all of these things because any alternative is too scary to think about!  Because I lost my vehicle last week.

For more than a year, I have taken a cab to this particular appointment that occurs roughly every six weeks. Only twice before have I driven to it, in a part of the city with which I am unfamiliar.  It’s a collection of tree-lined, simliar-looking snaking streets in and around a university. Both times, I parked underground and paid a ridiculous price for the privilege.  This time, I thought as I pulled into the area, I’ll try street parking instead.  So I did.  And I thought I kept track of where I parked.  Not so much, apparently.

For a full half hour I retraced my steps and tried in vain to locate my not-so-common vehicle.  I punched the alam off and on.  No sound.  My comfortable shoes cut into the tops of my feet and I passed a painter so many times that it started to get weird.  So I paused to chat with him briefly and discussed the possibility that my vehicle had been stolen!

I was really starting to think my baby had been boosted when I decided to widen the scope of my search and as I approached a street I hadn’t before considered, a feeling of deja vu took me over.  I knew that once I turned the corner, a familiar sight would appear.  And it did.  And it was good! But it was also a full 30 minutes after I started out for my ride.

I am somewhat comforted by tales from others who have lost their cars in shopping mall parking lots.  But it was still pretty darn unnerving.  I’ve put it down to Friday exhaustion.  That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!
