Spitzer This One Out
I’m sorry, but if I were married to New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, I don’t know if I could have stood beside him while he gave a lame apology to the Big Apple yesterday. Spitzer, who built a campaign on cleaning up corruptions, violated everything sacred in his life by hiring a call girl, on the eve of Valentine’s Day no less, to fly to him and service him for thousands of dollars. He apologized, although not for anything specific. And as of this writing he hasn’t said if he will resign.
He should resign and face criminal charges and be sentenced to house arrest. Follow me here. Spitzer is 48 and has been married for 21 years. His wife’s face showed her pain and discomfort as she stood beside him and his crocodile tear stained face at the podium yesterday. They have three teenaged daughters. He should have to stay in the house with all of those women for many weeks, enduring their glares, questions, and pain caused by his selfish and reckless actions.
And what kind of a message does a woman like Mrs. Spitzer send to other women? I suppose that for all we know, she could be beating him with a whiffle bat when they’re alone in the Governor’s mansion, but the public show of support? Do you do that with someone you love even when they’ve betrayed you and what you stand for in such a way? I hope I never have to find out.
