Budget Shmudget
It’s no wonder most peoples’ eyes glaze over when you talk about politics. The minority federal government’s third budget was released yesterday. How our government spends our money is an important issue but it came off as one big, fat yawn.
Here’s what I believe the average person hears during budget coverage and how they react:
The government has a 13 billion dollar surplus. “They have WHAT? I’m being taxed up the wazoo and they’re sitting on 13 EXTRA billion dollars? Here’s an idea! Give a little of it back to the people like me whose sweat equity made it pile up in the first place, you arrogant tools!”
A new savings vehicle will allow you to save five thousand dollars tax free. “Listen, bucko, if I could save five thousand dollars, I’d save five thousand dollars regardless of the tax bite. This is going to benefit the rich and the old and it has precious little to do with me or my kids who are entering the workforce and not the least bit concerned about tax consequences on a savings account. They’re concerned about how they’re even going to START a savings account!”
The conservatives will applaud and the liberals will shrug and there will be no election prompted by this fiscal update. Wake me up when it’s over!
