The Dumb And The Brainless
There’s just no getting around it. There are a lot of stupid people out there! I’m not talking about regular people like you and me who have dumb moments. I certainly admit to those. But people who are just so greedy or cheap or looking for an angle or an edge on life that doesn’t exist, that they’re BIG stupid.
A man is being sought for setting up a dental office in his North York basement apartment. Police say the carpet was stained and the place was definitely not sanitary, but still, customers were coming to the “dentist” because his price was right! Turns out he’s not a dentist at all – shocker, I know. One of his suckers got an infection and marched his swelling face down to a cop shop to whine. Now the hunt is on for the fake dentist on the run.
A couple of weeks ago another man cried on the front of the Toronto Sun about how he gave 10′s of thousands of dollars to a young man who claimed to have a link to lady luck, in exchange for a promise to win the lottery. When the jackpot didn’t materialize, the sucker went to police.
How did that conversation go? Did the mark finally put 2 and 2 together when he explained the situation out loud? “I gave a stranger thousands of dollars every week for several weeks because he said he’d give me the winning lottery numbers. But he gave me the wrong numbers! Arrest him!”
Let’s cut to the chase. There are all sorts of scam artists who prey on the weak and should be stopped. Home renovators who put fear into elderly, vulnerable house owners top that list. But any adult who gets suckered into something so obviously bogus and stupid is on their own in my opinion. Oh, sure, the perp still needs to be stopped but I would give the person who got scammed an enthusiastic shrug of the shoulders and send them on their way. You can’t legislate common sense. That’s why it’s called “common”.
There is no easy route to beating the odds of life. Dentists have to get a lot of schooling and they tend to work in nice offices with staff and sterile equipment. That’s why they cost more. I have little sympathy for those who think they’re going to find an edge on the way things work only to find themselves looking for justice over their swollen faces and empty bank accounts.
