Simply Having A Repetitive Christmastime

Posted By Lisa

Today I heard a contemporary Christmas song I’d never heard before and I rather liked it; Rob Thomas’ New York Christmas. (Turns out it’s a few years old) I realized that it’s been literally years since I heard a new holiday tune that didn’t make me want to impale myself on a candy cane.

Some of the songs that have become standards are truly mediocre at best. Paul McCartney sounds like he’s tuning up a kids’ plastic keyboard in “Wonderful Christmastime”, a song he appears to have written on a lark, as in, “Beatles fans will buy any crap I put out – just watch!”.

“Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer” should have gone the way of “My Dingaling” and “Disco Duck” and other novelty songs before it, but once The Rovers covered it, it became can-con, and therefore cemented in the playlists of stations across this great land.

Whenever I hear Whitney Houston warble, “Do You Hear What I Hear” I want to shout back, Hey Whitney, hearing voices again? Lay off the coke, babe!

So many of my colleagues and peers also claim to be bored with so-called holiday music. So I’ll never understand why we accept a steady diet of it from Halloween until the start of the New Year.
