The Skinny On Our Weight Obsession

Posted By Lisa

Andrea the red-headed cashier from Whitby, was chosen Canada’s Next Top Model. Andrea’s response to repeatedly being called “too skinny?” “My opponent’s upper body looks like a hockey player!” Oscar winner Kate Hudson today won her libel case against the UK Enquirer tabloid for calling her “dangerously thin”. Most Hollywood stars are dangerously thin. Only Kate Hudson doesn’t take it as a compliment.

Indian actress Aishwarya Rai, whom Julia Roberts calls “the most beautiful woman in the world”, is currently under orders by a director to lose weight for her next film role. Her strict religion forbids her from depicting anything sexual with a man on screen, but her agent happily reports Aishwarya is a “dedicated actress” who is complying with the directive to slim down.

Star Jones loses a Calista Flockhart off her ass but won’t admit she had gastric bypass surgery. The gossip magazines marvel at how miraculously fast Angelina Jolie has shed her pregnancy weight while a few pages later, bitchily list everything Oprah has eaten today. Kirstie Alley is no longer the whipping girl of the gossip pages because she has reduced her food intake to a grape and a celery stick and now looks the way we want to see her, like she did back on Cheers.

An entire magazine is dedicated to the cellulite of the stars because, my goodness, if you’re famous and have millions, how could you allow yourself to develop puckered thighs? A certain Doctor comes over the radio and tells you that you could get a zillion diseases if you gain 10 just pounds.

Transfat, good fad, bad cholesterol, high calories, low carb – nobody knows what to eat anymore! When will the madness stop?
