Review: David Gilmour, Massey Hall

Posted By Lisa

The David Gilmour show at Massey Hall last night rocked. It also floated and wriggled into easy listening territory.  I love Gilmour and Pink Floyd but I’m not a fan of Dave’s new solo CD, On An Island. It’s over-produced, overwrought and, well, except for Take A Breath, it’s boring. Take out the guitar solos and you’ve got Lionel Richie or some other middle of the road artist. Hearing it live didn’t do anything to alter my opinion. The entire first half of the concert relied on songs from On An Island and it only came to life when they played Take A Breath.

The set list for the second half was more of the “old stuff” but it was weird. Why play the title track from The Division Bell? Only, it seems, to justify shipping an enormous bell with all the gear. I would have loved to hear Learning To Fly, live, but I guess The Division Bell tour version of that ol’ classic we saw back in 1994, will have to do.
