The Iraq War Is Hell

Posted By Lisa

I heard a fascinating interview today with an ex commander who was there for Gulf War One. He explained that the troops would be about 60 miles out of Basra, Iraq before anyone in command would give the go ahead to put out word that Basra had been “captured.” Of course, we all know they’re keeping certain aspects of the war to themselves for strategic purposes and – this is a strange There’s always debate about who’s presenting a “fair” view of something as sensitive and tragic as a military conflict where innocent lives will be lost. But let’s face it. We’re all being spun and no matter whose coverage you prefer, it’s really not that much different than the others. Some might have more analysis. Some might get the facts a bit earlier but we’re all being spun from the front lines on through.

A strange thing for a newsperson to say, I suppose – but I wish they’d keep MORE to themselves. Openness and transparency are important because it’s what makes our democracy superior to Saddam’s dictatorship but at the same time, this play by play war is a bit much. Still, like the other news junkies of the world, I can’t turn away. I guess you could say I’m conflicted about this conflict. And I wish it were over now for the sake of the civilians whose cities are being bombed and whose parents have to explain to their children why it’s happening. There’s another concern. How many of those kids will grow up with a deep and festering hate for the west? What child can understand the reasoning (or alleged reasoning, for my conspiracy “it’s all about oil” minded friends) when their homes are being rattled and their beautiful cities are being ruined? Saddam is a bastard who doesn’t deserve to share our air. But it’s very sad that it’s come to this

I remember my Grandmother telling me about World War Two and saying, with a satisfied smile, “You’ll never have to experience war in your lifetime.” Well, maybe I won’t experience it first hand but it’s certainly happening right there in full colour, in my living room.
